I AM THOU, THOU ART I...

nagito komaeda (dangan ronpa)

JUSTICE

Despite his numerous self-image problems, Komaeda subconsciously sees himself as an upholder of justice; he promotes hope for the hopeful, and tries to bring down the despairing. He is not a believer in explaining people’s crimes to them, because he knows they will not understand; he simply goes about his business and helps/harms them as he sees fit. Although he would never admit it, he likes to imagine himself as the protector and upholder of hope (the ‘law’).

Unfortunately, he’s also so Reversed it’s not even funny.

The card Justice is about cutting through the lies, and seeing the facts how they really are. Komaeda, right now, is functionally incapable of doing this. (Thanks, dementia!) So while his heart is in the right place, he isn’t as far along on the path of Justice as he thinks he is. Perhaps, someday, he will gain the self-awareness to look at himself and his actions in an objective light. Until then, he will carry on with his judgment of corruption.

journal/data riku (kingdom hearts)

HANGED MAN
( collectivedata @ we the lost )

In some early decks, the Hanged Man was instead known as the ‘Traitor’, but the same idea applies to both: a young man has been tied to a tree by one leg, left with nothing but his thoughts. It is an exchange of physical freedom for mental freedom – this young man is isolated from the world, and so has no way to distract himself from looking inward. Indeed, the Hanged Man indicates that some introspection is necessary on the querent’s part, and it makes damn well sure that the querent performs that introspecting.

According to Nomura, the core question of Re:coded’s plot was this: “Can a heart be born in an existence made of data?” Or, to put it another way: “Can an artificial intelligence have feelings and identity?” The answer to that question is what Journal wants to find out.

Journal has been taken from the infinite datascape and again from Balamb Garden, both settings where he had a world to explore and a task to perform to distract him from his inner thoughts. However, now he lives in the Meadous, where an insurmountable wall traps him in a little village with numerous other temporospatial anomalies – including Riku, the real one, reminding him that he can no longer use someone else’s name and personality (even if he steals their face). Journal now must find and protect the small spark of a heart within him, in order to discover his own emotions and identity… separate from Riku, and separate from the data.

henry (fire emblem)

TEMPERANCE

Henry is a child of the Moon card by nature. He couldn’t be more Moony if he tried. (Fun fact: the word ‘lunatic’ translates literally as ‘moonstruck’.) However, these arcana assignments are more about what characters need to learn, rather than what they already are. Now, Henry doesn’t like when things are too complicated, and he hates having to keep track of concepts with a lot of moving parts – like tactics, or morality, or (most of all) understanding himself. If he is ever to mature at all, understanding himself is an absolute requirement. So instead of trying to manage everything at once like he would with the Chariot card, his preferred solution is simply to combine the various influences into one.

That’s where Temperance comes in. It is the blending of opposites to create harmony; not abstinence, but moderation.

Contradictions make up almost all of Henry’s personality. You’ve got your feral instinct versus your civilized manners, your gleeful nature versus your violent tendencies, and so on. Henry is afraid that he’ll have to give up one to attain the other: he doesn’t want to give up his animal heart because that’s how he was raised, but subconsciously, he doesn’t want to write off humans as the scum of the earth anymore, either. The path of Temperance should eventually lead him to the knowledge and experience to combine both parts of himself into something harmonious and… hopefully not genocidal.
